Biometric Collection

Introduction

Biometric data is an increasingly important tool in identity management globally, helping countries reduce fraud and integrity risks. The Australian Government incorporates the collection of biometrics (fingerprints and facial images) into the visa application process. Applicants lodging a visa application in Hong Kong, might need to provide biometrics in support of each visa application they lodge, unless an exemption applies.

Collection process

Applicants who lodge their visa applications online and are required to provide biometrics will be sent a letter by email informing them that they need to attend the AVAC in person to provide their biometrics.

Applicants who lodge their visa applications on paper at the AVAC, will be asked to provide their biometrics at the same time if applicable.

Visa applicants who mail their applications to the AVAC in Hong Kong, will be sent a letter requiring them to attend the AVAC, in person, to provide their biometrics if applicable. An appointment needs to be scheduled with the AVAC for biometrics collection.

Exemptions

Holders of People's Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and British Nationals Overseas passports are currently exempt from mandatory biometrics collection however all applicants should be aware that they can still be requested to undertake biometrics collection. This exemption does not apply to student and student guardian visa applicants.
