Australia Day 2020
Celebrating the spirit of Australia and resilience

(24 Jan 2020) – Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Mr Paul Chan, GBS, MH, JP, and Australian Consul-General Ms Michaela Browning both praised the robust Australia-Hong Kong relationship during an official celebration in Hong Kong to mark Australia’s national day that falls on 26 January.

Officiating the national day reception last night, Consul-General Ms Michaela Browning highlighted the Australian ‘vibe’ and remarked the country’s great achievements as well as the resilience of Australians in fighting against the bushfires – which resembles the resilience among Hong Kong people.

“Australia and Hong Kong are each facing some tough times. Our commitment to Hong Kong and Hongkongers has been steadfast,” Ms Browning said.

“The Australia-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement came into force last week reflects our unwavering support for Hong Kong’s unique status and freedoms as part of China and our hopes for its future. Hong Kong remains our favourite commercial hub in Asia,” she added.

Paying tribute to the Australian bushfire relief efforts, Ms Browning also acknowledged all the support and generous contributions for the bushfires recovery by people and business as well the Australian community in Hong Kong and Macau.

More than 400 Hong Kong and Australian business, political and community leaders joined to celebrate Australia’s successes and friendship with Hong Kong at the national day reception held on 23 January by the Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong.
