Notarial Services: Authenticating or Legalising Australian Documents

If you wish to apply by mail  for this service, please email us at [email protected] for further instructions

Authentication

We can only authenticate/legalise Australian documents.  If you require authentication of an education document, please provide verification from the issuing institution.  Contact the issuing institution for assistance.

Education documents presented to the Consulate for an authentication must have been issued by an Australian accredited education authority. See the Australian Qualifications Framework website for more information on who can issue education documents in Australia.  Some educational authorities provide online verification. Check the Smartraveller website for further information.

If your education document was issued by an institution in a foreign country, it will need to be authenticated by that country.

Apostille

An Apostille is a statement placed on a public document pursuant to the 1969 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation of Foreign Public Documents.  An apostille verifies the country of origin of the document, the identity of the signature/seals/stamps which appear on the document and the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted.

Education documents presented to the Consulate for an apostille must have been issued by an Australian accredited education authority. See the Australian Qualifications Framework website for more information on who can issue education documents in Australia.  Some educational authorities provide online verification. Check the Smartraveller website for further information.

If your education document was issued by an institution in a foreign country, it will need to be authenticated by that country.

From 1 July 2015, we are permitted to issue Australian apostilles on original public documents. Clients seeking an Apostille should submit the relevant documents (providing they are public documents) to the Australian Consulate-General.

Authentication or an apostille?

You should check with the local authorities requesting the document as to their requirements in order to ensure that the appropriate service is provided for your documents to be accepted. Consulate staff cannot advise clients of foreign requirements. General information is available from the Smartraveller website https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/consular-services/notarial-services/documents-overseas

Please allow two standard business working days for collection of an authentication and an apostille.
